The strategy of risk

Article Abstract:

European directives have led to changes in UK health and safety legislation, but a lack of core definitions means there is widespread uncertainty over what the legal requirements now are. Since 1974, UK health and safety laws were based on the concept of 'so far as is reasonably practicable'; the European directives instead introduce an absolute requirement to carry out a risk assessment. However, many of the terms in the new legislation have not been defined within the regulations or been interpreted within a court. This in turn leads to a lack of standardisation in risk assessments.

Regulate to compete

Article Abstract:

An report from the Union of Industrial and Employers' Confederation of Europe (UNICE) has shown that employers would rather intervention from the Government concerning health and safety issues, rather than adopt a decentralising approach. Over 50% of British employers within the European survey said that they were willing to bear the increased cost proposed with some directives if it would avoid decentralisation. The need for protection from carcinogens and construction work was expressed by about 70% of employers.

School's out...safety's in Part 2: managing health and safety out of school requires a positive safety culture at school

Article Abstract:

Activities that take place outside of school premises need to be identified for hazards and risks within a health and safety management framework. Physical education pursuits often involve trips to swimming pools, leisure centres and playing fields, and risk assessments should consider the capabilities and limitations of the pupils involved and the equipment safety. Field trips need careful organisation to include adequate insurance arrangements.
