Turbulent times ahead

Article Abstract:

The end of 2004 is witnessing unrest in many European countries and a surge in industrial action as trade unions protest against enterprise restructuring plans and budgets. Many companies are considering restructuring or relocation, resulting in job losses. A heartwarming feature of this scenario is the agreement between the Volkswagen management and workers in which the jobs are protected with some conditions.

Germany u Cost-saving accord at DaimlerChrysler

Article Abstract:

A new agreement has been signed between the management and employee representatives at the car manufacturer DaimlerChrysler. The deal will increase the working time of the employees with a modest cut in pay, but will ensure job security for about 6,000 employees.

Draft proposals on employment and social reforms have been presented by the chancellor Gerhard Schroder. The plans have evoked strong criticism from trade unions as they feel that the proposals are detrimental to workers and unemployed.
