Union slams watchdog for asbestos removal respirator tests cover up

Article Abstract:

Some respirators may not give the protection that manufacturers claim according to an HSE-sponsored report and asbestos removal contractors should not rely on such equipment alone for protection. Research shows that asbestos removal is more dangerous than previously thought and the GMB union is calling for wider promotion of the use of chemical sprays as well as RPE. It also wants the HSE to make public the list of respirators that have failed safety tests. However the HSE has said that no asbestos was detected in most respirators tested and where it was present it was in low concentrations.

Judge slams prosecutor's use of expert witness on tunnel collapse

Article Abstract:

A record 1.2 million pounds sterling fine was imposed on Balfour Beatty and 500,000 pounds sterling on Geoconsult, its Austrian consultant, after the collapse of tunnels being constructed at Heathrow in 1994. However they were ordered to pay only 100,000 pounds sterling towards the Health & Safety Executive's (HSE) prosecution costs after a breach of guidelines on the use of expert witnesses. HSE has also been criticised for late disclosure of information.

Asbestos alert

Article Abstract:

Asbestos has been used extensively in UK buildings, six million tonnes have arrived in Britain since 1900. Until recently when the dangers of inhaling asbestos dust were recognised it has been a useful material, particularly for fire protection. It is suggested that building managers carry out surveys to identify asbestos, what type has been used and whether removal or some other form of protection is required.
