Four significant changes to affect the 401(k) plan

Article Abstract:

The 401(k) plan, the mainstay investment vehicle for an employee's retirement benefit, is seen to continue its evolution in the decade of the 1990s. However, four significant changes are predicted to affect this savings tool. A few of these changes will directly impact on the employee while others will be milder. Such changes are in the areas of administrative structure, employee education, cost awareness and a better understanding of the interdependent nature of employee benefits.

DC plans accepted, assets growing... what's the problem?

Article Abstract:

The two structural weaknesses that may combine to prevent defined contribution plans from being savings vehicles and important sources of retirement income are identified and described. These weaknesses concern the asset mix of these plans, which are seen as too conservative and needs sufficient diversification, and asset mix decisions, which are entrusted to the employee, who is regarded as the person least able to create and maintain the right 'mix' for them.
