Article Abstract:

Interviews with the heads of personnel of six of the best-run companies in the US reveals many of the successful ways companies are dealing with challenging human resources issues. Merck and Co dir of corporate personnel relations E. Jeffrey Stoll has helped the company develop a new program which connects performance to salary. Dow Jones and Co manager of training and development, employee relations department Charlene Watler has assisted in developing a manager training program. Liz Claiborne Inc corporate VP of human resources Kathryn Connors believes her company is especially attuned to the needs of female workers because the company is 62% female. The company offers parental leave with pay and is considering building on-site day care. 3M manger of executive development Dennis L. Nowlin has worked with his department to reorganize and refocus the human resources organization so that the management is more decentralized. J.P. Morgan and Co manager of human resources policy and consulting Helen Finnigan says the company provides the necessary training for employees to acquire strong general skills, such as communication and decision making skills.
