What type of knowledge is need in the foreign branches: staffing practices in large US law firms

Article Abstract:

Law firms with branches abroad can opt to send staff with specific knowledge about the foreign country's legal system or they may send staff who are experienced and are familiar with the companies which are doing business abroad. Older firms tend to send staff who know the clients while younger firms send staff with knowledge about the host country. Profitability does not appear to be a deciding factor in selecting an option. However, if the country is culturally very different then law firms tend to send their own staff rather than recruit local people.

Disseminating knowledge to build a learning organization

Article Abstract:

A study of a New Zealand company indicates that staff need to be kept informed about their company and its decision-making to give them an overall picture of their organisation and how they can play their own part. Staff at all levels appear to find have no problem acquiring information which is available to all on an informal basis, but it is only at a higher level that information is freely handed out to employees on a formal basis. Staff would be better informed if they chose the sources of information to be accessed.
