When the CEO recruits

Article Abstract:

The issue of underqualified employees being hired on the basis of favors from the CEO should be dealt with by the head of personnel, particularly when these hires are not performing as expected and other employees have already expressed concern about the oddness of the hiring process employed. A suggestion made by many human resource professionals is for the personnel manager to discuss the matter with the CEO in order to iron out any conflicts regarding the scope of duties and responsibilities of the human resources department, particularly in the recruitment and screening of applicants. The personnel director must point out to the CEO the potential dangers brought by the unfairness of the selection process employed with the 'favored' hires and how this process can affect other employees.

Centralize control of giving references

Article Abstract:

Personnel Journal presented a hypothetical case of a woman whose job applications were being turned down because her former supervisor was giving out poor references to the companies that the woman was hoping to join. The woman was highly competent in her previous job, so her resignation was a blow to her supervisor. Readers were invited to discuss how they would have handled the situation as human resources professionals. The responses of fivehuman resources professionals and one personnel management student are presented.
