When training is a charitable act

Article Abstract:

Sun Life Corporation PLC runs training courses that impart transposable skills appropriate for both business purposes and non-commercial voluntary activities. In coordination with the Action Research Center (ARC), the project helps Sun Life develop closer ties with the locals of Bristol where it is based. The resultant enhanced image as a good employer helps the insurance company in its recruiting activities. Trainers from ARC, on the other hand, welcome this opportunity to expand their experiences. Training sessions on presentation skills and assertiveness included such volunteer workers as inner-city vocational instructors and helpers of carers for disabled people. Favorable assessment of the courses by participants and trainers encouraged Sun Life to hold 10 external programs during 1993.

Training for a different management style

Article Abstract:

United Technologies Corp took over Britain's Essex Wire in the early 1980s, and applied its training and development program to help change attitudes and make managers aware of the value of participative management. Emphases in this effort included: creating and sharing a corporate vision, taking initiative, giving power to others, and working to gain support within the company. Over 3,000 managers have attended this program. Results among managers have been favorable, but it is noted that changing corporate culture must be viewed as a long-term process.
