First term report on the London Compact

Article Abstract:

The London Compact was launched in September, 1987, in response to a declining labor pool and the lack of skills and motivation in London youth. Under the terms of the Compact, employers: provide staff for schools; provide students with work experience; and guarantee jobs to those students who complete Compact requirements. Students must complete agreed upon goals in attendance; become qualified in English and mathematics skills; and complete two weeks of work experience. The Compact has been successful in providing motivation to students to improve performance and remain in full-time education beyond age 16.

Companies and colleges rally to support new governors

Article Abstract:

The British Education Reform Act of 1988 requires that half of all new college governors be from private business and industry. The private sector is encouraging participation by providing training and incentives to employees who become governors. Approximately 4,500 new governors will have to be recruited and trained in the coming year. A report by two college principals commissioned by the Department of Education recommends increased standards of training; regional and national support for training and recruitment; and an emphasis on team-building during training.
