The private replacement markets have been the current trend in the insurance industry. Insurers may be able to capitalize on this scheme if they could come up with good contract on wealthy families who want to net their assets from taxes. One prevailing advantage of private placement is that individual's with at least one million can invest in products without the need to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The most private-placement activity is among companies and institutional investors often as a means of raising capital.

Defending risk selection

Article Abstract:

The ability to underwrite is basic to the insurance industry. However, the pressure for equal treatment of all insurance prospects is putting the concept of underwriting, or risk classification, under attack. The risk classification concept must be defended by insurers in order to have a level playing field. Insurance carriers must educate the public to show that risk classification provides needed coverage at a fair price for specific needs.

Spin-offs: the latest divestiture fad

Article Abstract:

Many insurance corporations are divesting their businesses through spin-offs. Spin-offs are tax-free transactions in which a parent company creates a new subsidiary. Under the spin-off, the shareholders of the original company become the shareholders of the subsidiary on a prorata basis. Spin-offs often present unique business issues, including capital structure, separation and human resources issues.
