Agents should consider why they need the new carrier, and how the new carrier's business will fit with its established lines. Carriers should consider an agency's recent business production, its current relationship with its long-term carriers, and the qualifications and experience of its staff.

Effective councils provide an opportunity to improve communications, but these meetings may also be used as incentives or marketing opportunities. The best agency council are mutually beneficial to insurers and agents, and they enable agents to raise concerns about insurer actions.

Carrier-agency planning aids appointment success

The Independent Insurance Agents of America has a planning tool that enables an agency to do its planning with its appointed companies only once each year. It is in paper form in 1995 but will be converted to computer diskette in 1996. This planning tool will enable an agency to get the optimum out of its relationship with a company.
