Current environment: Hurricane Katrina's impact likely to be far reaching

Article Abstract:

The impact of Hurricane Katrina on property and casualty insurance industry is discussed. It is expected that insurance premiums for certain coastal properties will increase and there will be delays in settling claims. A glimpse at the profits, investment results, losses and loss adjustment expenses, loss ratio, expense ratio, and dividend ratio, of the industry in the first half of 2005, is also presented.

Methods are suggested for analyzing the financial performance of a property and casualty insurance company. The relationship of pricing with interest rates, forecasting of profits, cashflow and leverage are discussed in this context.
