Europe's baron of beef

Article Abstract:

Franz Fischler is the European Commissioner for agriculture who has to tackle the problem of bovine spongiform encephalopathy and its impact on Europe's beef industry. The Commision has prohibited trade in UK beef products world wide and this is seen as a measure to protect the industry in mainland Europe. He aims to restore public confidence in the beef industry and gives more weight to consumers' opinions than the British government. This is also evident in his support of a ban on the use of growth hormones, which the UK opposes.

Wholesale meat trade grinds to a halt

Article Abstract:

The UK meat wholesale market has seen trade almost totally halted due to the inability of processors to understand government regulations to remove older cattle from human consumption. These rules relate to imported beef and especially affect Australia and Argentina. Supermarkets are questioning how old the cattle are for meat purchases. Some meat may be left unsold since the cattle were slaughtered before the regulations came into effect, though the regulations are supposed to apply to cattle killed after the announcement.

Slashed prices attract some bargain hunters

Article Abstract:

The impact of concern over bovine spongiform encephalopathy in the UK has been to push down the price of beef in some supermarkets, and some consumers have been buying in bulk. This has led to shortages in some supermarkets which are reordering. Sales have fallen less in farming areas such as south west England than in London. Butchers have seen their costs rise due to regulations to contain the disease, and this, combined with a drop in beef sales, could lead to some smaller butchers having to close down.
