Fiscal market solutions attract spotlight in 1996; financial market techniques are emerging as a solution to underwriting problems, but is the insurance industry ready for them?

Article Abstract:

Innovative catastrophic insurance financing and risk management facilities are being introduced by the financial markets, including options and futures offered by the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT). While these new facilities can be used to cover catastrophic exposures and offer solutions to other underwriting problems, the insurance industry is wary of them due to their novelty. The industry has shown little interest in the CBOT's earthquake and windstorm contracts. However, if the industry does not use these facilities or fails to develop its own balance sheet solutions to cover risk, it will lose market share to financial institutions that do.

Data warehousing speeds decision-making process

Article Abstract:

Information delivery facilities (IDF), also known as data warehouses, can help an insurance company's management team access and analyze the information which it needs to make decisions. Development of an IDF should follow the identification of the business information which is needed, but currently inaccessible. Project development should include design and usage of a prototype system, account for data inconsistencies among different systems, and maintain realistic goals.
