Fixed annuity premiums survey: SPDAs and FPRAs in general and separate accounts

Article Abstract:

The instability of variable interest rate investments in 1994 caused sales of single and flexible premium fixed annuities to grow. Direct premiums and fund deposits went up 9.7% from 1993 to 1994. A survey by the A.M. Best Co shows the qualified and nonqualified fixed annuities of the top 150 companies. They are divided into those reported in the general account and those in separate accounts. The companies are ranked by the total direct premiums in both categories and listed by rank.

Variable annuity fund rates have also fluctuated throughout 1994 making fixed annuity funds attractive to investors again. The bad news for the insurance industry is that banks, based upon a US Supreme Court decision, may now sell annuities.
