Health information networks

Article Abstract:

Community health information networks (CHIN) will allow patients and medical personnel to communicate over a shared network with a common interface. Such a network will allow hospitals and insurance companies instantaneous communication, thus eliminating typical two- to three-week waiting periods and simplifying claims processes. However, some people believe that data maintenance, as well as security and confidentiality issues present two possible areas of concern with the use of CHINs.

Half the battle is holding on

Article Abstract:

A problem that needs to be addressed is the growing disenrollment among senior members whose constant plan switching connotes extra costs for the provider. This can be dealt with by offering individualized service and attention as well as creating retention incentives.

Genetic testing battle pits insurers against consumers

Article Abstract:

Genetic testing is a controversial issue between health insurers and consumers. Consumers believe that genetic information may be used to deny insurance coverage while insurers believe that genetic testing provides a more accurate assessment of a person's potential health risks. The Department of Energy and National Institutes of Health initiated the Human Genome Project in 1987 to characterize the entire genetic makeup of the body.
