Lull in annuities sales may soon end

Article Abstract:

Life insurers reported more than $24 billion in total premiums from single premium deferred annuities (SPDA) in 1995, a 13% decrease from $27.3 billion in 1994. Variable annuity premiums also dropped in 1995, to less than $28 billion from $30.5 billion in 1994. While a bullish stock market may have drawn money away from annuities in 1995, uncertainty over stocks in 1996 may help annuity sales. Actual accumulation and surrender values for SPDAs are discussed.

Statistics presented for policies of 114 companies include expense and values for level death benefit, increasing death benefit and actual credited interest for 1990-1994.
