Pace quickens in the search for help in catastrophe crisis

Article Abstract:

Large insurance losses from natural disasters have prompted a number of reform plans. The U.S. House is considering a proposed Natural Disaster Protection Partnership Act. A Catastrophe Risk Exchange network is awaiting approval by the New York Insurance Department. Legislation is being considered in Florida to deal with problems in homeowners insurance and the growth of the Joint Underwriting Assn. The National Assn of Insurance Commissioners may institute a catastrophic reserve requirement for insurers. California is exploring ways to increase availability of homeowners and earthquake insurance coverage.

Risk manager's survey identifies key concerns

Article Abstract:

A survey of 225 risk managers attending the Liberty Mutual Risk Management Forum identified important issues facing the industry including the most significant claims management functions. The most important areas for risk managers participating in the survey are claims investigation, return to work programs, claims reporting, medical case management and litigation management. The survey showed that disaster recovery plans were reported to be in place for more than 60% of respondents.

Raising capital in the public market

Article Abstract:

Insurance companies will consider offering public stock as a means of raising capital for anticipated increased underwriting activity. The strength of the stock market has led to a recent increase in initial public offerings by mid-sized insurance companies. Qualities that make an insurance company suitable for a public stock offering and the advantages and disadvantages of stock offering are described. Self-evaluation issues for a company considering going public are listed.
