Retirement at risk: the growing threat of health costs

Article Abstract:

Economic trends and public policies are endangering retirement security for current employees and future retirees. According to a national survey conducted by the Northwestern National Life Insurance Company, majority of workers expect comfortable retirement while economic trends foretell the exact opposite. Survey data also indicate that Americans are totally confident of financial security in retirement, although they lack knowledge regarding real health care costs during retirement. In addition, Americans are also divided on placing the responsibility for the funding of retiree medical costs.

As national health care reform is being considered, the issues of adequate mental health benefit coverage, accessibility and quality treatment must also be addressed.

"Total compensation" plan design: beyond dependent care benefits: the Life cycle Allowance

Article Abstract:

Dependent care benefits for employees are best addressed through a Life Cycle Allowance. Due to changes in the workforce employers are providing benefits for their employees that balance their work responsibilities with other aspects of their lives. However, few companies are willing to commit to any direct financing of theses benefits. Despite this, a Life Cycle Allowance can provide solutions to problems of equity and uncertain costs regarding dependent care.
