Revitalizing the falling 401(k) system: What discretionary trustees offer that directed trustees do not

Article Abstract:

A critical perspective of the employee directed 401(k) plans, during the 1990s, that were assumed to produce higher savings over traditional and defined benefit plans, but in reality, camouflaged the actual problem, is presented. The final conclusion drawn was, most Americans are saving too little and generating insufficient investment returns to finance desired retirements. In this context, the role of the employer/plan sponsor, an analysis of the 401(k) plans and the core issues underlying it, the role and functions of a discretionary trustee, and the need for tougher and stricter regulations to make these plans work, are presented.
