Reinsurers can get burned in rush to managed care

Article Abstract:

Many reinsurers are disregarding risks as they target the managed care industry as an area of high growth for stop-loss and provider-excess coverage. Customers for this coverage include hospitals and physician groups that are capitated by HMOs and have little managed care experience. In order to avoid potential disaster, reinsurers must have access to reliable data on the patient population. Risk management and review techniques will help reinsurers and their clients treat managed care reinsurance as a service rather than a commodity.

Technological challenges face insurers abroad

Article Abstract:

Insurance agencies seeking to set up offices and branches in foreign countries should be forewarned that telecommunications technology will not be as easy or as widespread as in the US. Many countries lack sophisticated or dependable telephone systems, and computers and fax machines are not as prevalent in many parts of Europe and Asia. Foreign governments will also have special regulations governing services.

Technological challenges face insurers abroad

Article Abstract:

US insurers face several challenges when establishing foreign branches in emerging markets. Many countries do not share levels of telecommunication services familiar to US insurers. Governmental bureaucracy, monopolized service, inadequate infrastructures and import regulations often pose problems for US insurers. US insurers should work with consultants to understand foreign laws and customs.
