The 105th Congress: mandates ahead

Article Abstract:

Legislators have been busy enacting amendments to employer-sponsored health and retirement programs that impose additional requirements for the benefit of employees but at the expense of simple implementation. Many employers are irritated and expect more changes to come with the entry of the 105th Congress. Among the more significant laws enacted by the 104th Congress were the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, the Newborns' and Mothers' Health Protection Act and the Mental Health Parity Act.

Retirement security focus on women, small businesses

Article Abstract:

An evaluation of legislative trends with regards to labor laws reveals that Congress is not likely to enact broad retirement security laws and Women's Comprehensive Pension Protection in 1998. The passing of the Small Business Protection Act and the Secure Assets for Employees in 1997 ensures that Congress will try to enact only minor revisions in its existing labor laws to minimize opposition and to facilitate cost offsetting.

Will 1995 finally be the year for pension simplification?

Article Abstract:

The employee benefits sector is optimistic that the Clinton Administration will finally sign a pension simplification law. Pension simplification is part of VP Al Gore's 'Reinventing Government' program and has been expanded to include coverage among small businesses. The main fear is that Pres. Clinton might veto a larger bill in which pension simplification is a part.
