The SERP exchange: a win-win compensation and benefits strategy

Article Abstract:

A case study which describes the disadvantages of supplemental executive retirement plans (SERPs) is presented. The value of SERPs may not be passed on to future generations because they are taxed by as much as 70% of their amount just like other retirement plans. The SERP exchange will circumvent this handicap by trading future income for tax-advantaged future assets which can then be passed to heirs. These exchanges are contractual agreements wherein employees forfeit a specific amount in SERPs for an equivalent amount of life insurance payments made by the employer.
