The top 500 life and health insurance companies are listed by the amount of net premiums written in 1994. Prudential Insurance Company of America, which wrote $22,997,614,407 in premiums, maintained the top spot it held in 1993, despite a drop of 3.8%. The information provided includes current rank, 1994 premiums, percent change since 1993, and previous rank. The top 500 companies wrote a total of $346,285,607,885 in premiums in 1994, representing a 7.9% increase over 1993.

Article Abstract:

The life/health industry had a fruitful year as net premiums written in 1996 increased by 8.6%. This figure was nearly double the 1994 and 1995 growth rate of 4.8%. The growth in the life/health industry's premium volume in 1996 was due to stable equity markets and the industry's variable products. Variable products have been cited for the industry's revitalized premium growth. Variable products have returns which directly affect the performance of equities.

Company clears hurdles to cope with regulations

Article Abstract:

American Chambers Life Insurance Co hired Metamor Technologies Ltd to help establish an information system that would allow the insurer to meet the changing needs of a dynamic regulatory environment. The insurer found that its ratings systems was inflexible, making it difficult for the insurer to become in compliance with community rating regulations. The process of choosing and installing the information system is detailed.
