Colombia's tipping point?

Article Abstract:

Alvaro Uribe assumed the presidency of Colo mbia on 7 August 2002, riding a wave of general dissatisfaction with the country's increasingly violent conflict. Uribe's ambitious plan to gain control over lawless territories and provide security to all sectors of society, based on an expanded military and police presence and the creation of networks of civilian support, is controversial and has faced particularly fierce censure from human-rights organizations.

Germany's defence choices

Article Abstract:

The Germany security and defence policy is facing two central challenges. One of them is how to reconcile its ambition for a truly European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) with a continued commitment to NATO, while the other questions the way to modernize and transform the Bundeswehr, for without this transformation ESDP would not be viable, while Germany's contribution to the NATO would be inadequate.

Prospects for Middle East security-sector reform

Article Abstract:

Most regions in the Middle East have poor security services and the incumbent regimes that prevent social, economic and political change control its citizens. It is suggested that reforms in the security-sector of the Middle East is a necessity which will lead to greater regional stability and enhance legitimacy of governments.
