Engaging Iran: a US strategy

Article Abstract:

The US must realize that it is now time to moderate the demands it is making of Iran, particularly in areas connected with weapons of mass destruction. It is important to make progress on general bilateral relations, but this cannot be a substitute for addressing the key issues. The US should seek to move Iran away from a policy of aggressive independence and towards cooperation on economic and security matters. The US will find it easier to adapt a more positive policy towards Iran than Iran will find it to become more positive about relations with the US.

Appeasement will only encourage Iran

Article Abstract:

Fawaz Gerges' proposal for a reversal of US policy of opposing Iran will encourage Iran in its support for terrorism. The US has assumed a tough policy of passing economic sanctions against Iran to contain the military and ideological threat to Middle East peace process. If US accepts the suggestion of moderating its sanctions, this will appease the current military and foreign policy of Iraq. The call for more evidence of the role of Iran as the promoter of terrorism, however, is misplaced.

US policy towards Iran should change - but it probably won't

Article Abstract:

Fawaz Gerges rightly contends that US policy towards Iran should change as it encourages the cleric-dominated regime of Iran to acquire leverage over it through dangerous methods. However, a change in US approach is unlikely. The current policy deals with the potential ideological and military threat to muslim states and peace process in Asia. A change in policy may not result in corresponding moderation of behavior of Iran as Iran has rigid conception of its interests.
