From the girl child to girls' rights

Article Abstract:

Field and documentary research across East, South and Southeast Asia suggests that the girl child has not really benefited from the national programmes or local projects in support of girls. Gender divisions, hierarchies and stereotypes in childhood have to be changed if there is to be any reorientation in familiar entitlements or expectations as otherwise girls are likely to remain the most neglected of social categories in country policies and programmes within the development context.

Co-operation on money and finance: How important? How likely?

Article Abstract:

Initiatives for regional co-operation on financial and monetary issues have evolved from modest beginnings involving Southeast Asian countries in the 1950s, to more ambitious ideas for co-operation on an East Asian basis since 1997.Political disputes and co-ordination problems in East Asia could impede potentially beneficial co-operation, but such difficulties are not insurmountable.

The new bilateralism in the Asia Pacific

Article Abstract:

The new interest in bilateralism is explained by an increasing awareness of the weakness of existing regional institutions and initiatives, perceptions of positive demonstration effects from regional agreements elsewhere and changing configurations of domestic economic interests.
