German-American relations: the case for a preference

Article Abstract:

Germany's foreign policy in the Cold War era has been characterized by a penchant to take on sides on international issues and a strong desire to maintain amicable relations with all countries. The end of the Cold War, however, has made such a foreign policy untenable. Germany needs to develop a foreign policy that will ensure continued international peace and stability to maintain its access to vital raw materials. In case of the European Union, it may be advantageous to Germany to ally itself to the US without totally alienating itself from its European neighbors.

Extended air defense - Germany between European and transatlantic orientations

Article Abstract:

Germany seeks cooperation with France or the US to build a new air defense system but Germany's attempts to appease both countries has created complexities. German-US cooperation will ensure the effectiveness of the defense system but Germany should be careful in its negotiations to have a fair deal with the US. French-US collaboration can pave way for European independence in defense industry but doubts about French technology may affect the plans. A trilateral operation that involves the US, Germany and France will benefit all the three countries.

A European security and defense identity - what role for the United States?

Article Abstract:

The efforts towards a future European security and defense identity do not necessarily rule out the possibility of a common defense that takes into consideration that intergovernmental cooperation is the only way at present. Germany needs US cooperation in Europe to strategically neutralize Russia. The Western European Union (WEU) has to play dual role through NATO and the European Union. The United States should be accorded observer status at the WEU to achieve this end.
