Liberia and Sierra Leone: dead ringers? The logic of neopatrimonial rule

Article Abstract:

This article compares the reasons for civil war in Liberia and Sierra Leone, focusing on the contribution of neopatrimonial rule to political instability. The author suggests that extreme forms of neopatrimonial politics developed in these countries because of historical experience and the need to establish selfhood through division with a perceived 'other'; warlike conditions in either country affects efforts at sustainable peace.

Kindergarten killers: morality, murder and the child soldier problem

This article addresses the problem of children serving as soldiers in military groups around the world, with a specific focus on Sierra Leone. The author examines the possibility of the international legislation contributing to end this practice, and explores the psychological impact these children suffer and difficulties of rehabilitation.

Mercenary intervention in Sierra Leone: providing national security or international exploitation?

Article Abstract:

Mercenary companies are increasingly contracted to resolve low-intensity conflicts, especially intra-state disputes in Africa. The use of such troops in Sierra Leone demonstrates a link between such conflicts, strategic minerals, and the security vacuum produced by collapsed African states.
