Rebellion in Africa: Disagreeing the effect of political regimes

Article Abstract:

The factors that motivate rebels and facilitate their violent activities are studied and the influence of political institutions on the outbreak of violent, large-scale internal dissent in sub-Saharan African countries between 1971 and 1995 is analyzed by focusing on different types of executive selection processes and how changes to these processes affect the risk of insurgencies. Findings indicate that single-candidate elections and multi-party elections substantially reduce the risk of insurgencies.

Political challenge in Latin America: Rebellion and collective protest in an era of democratization

Article Abstract:

The effects of an array of theoretical determinants on occurrences of violent rebellion and nonviolent collective protest is examined, using a negative binomial event-count model on a pooled cross-sectional sample of 18 Latin America countries for the period 1980-93.The importance of democracy, government capacity, and repression in these models emphasizes that democracy is not solely the existence of democratic institution, but has social and economic implications as well.
