State, market, and global political economy: genealogy of an (inter-?) discipline

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the role of International Political Economy (IPE) in the social sciences; the history of this field of study is given, beginning in the 1960s; debates among scholars of international relations on the meaning and nature of interdependence, 'high' and 'low' politics and international versus transnational relations are analyzed. The nature of the state-market relationship is considered the core concept of IPE; views of this relationship influence the prospects for change; the state and the market need to be seen as parts of an integrated system of governance, rather than as distinct entities.

State of siege: will globalization win out?

Article Abstract:

It is argued that globalization has replaced the states system as the driving force behind the global policy process. While the state continues to play a significant role in world politics, the power and influence in the creation of world order are increasingly shifting toward non-state players. This trend presents a number of risks, including a loss of democratic control over historical developments and a deepening polarization of society.

What is to be done? Foreign policy as a site for political action

Article Abstract:

Foreign policy parameters lie firmly within normal politics and offer one of the most critical areas for a democratic polity. Proponents of globalization or neo-realism would treat foreign policy systemically, yet considerations of how states affect the world are crucially significant.
