Strategic uses of economic interdependence: Engagement policies on the Korean Peninsula and across the Taiwan Strait

Article Abstract:

A theoretical frameowrk that distinguishes between three types of engagement strategies, whereby a country deliberately expands economic ties with an adversary to change the target's behavior, is developed. Several hypotheses concerning the conditions facilitating or hindering the successful implementation of the strategies provided by the framework are presented and the engagement policies adopted by three East Asian states, South Korea, Taiwan, and Mainland China are examined.

Trading for security: Military alliances and economic agreements

Article Abstract:

A fresh look is taken at the long accepted argument that military allies are more likely to trade with one another than with non-allies underlining the connection between economics and security in international relations. However it is observed that allies, including military ones, who have specified economic cooperation in their alliance agreements trade more with one another than with those with whom there is no such promise of economic cooperation.
