The British road to war: Blair, Bush and the decision to invade Iraq

Article Abstract:

The British decision to go on war against Iraq with the United States has been widely criticized for being based on inaccurate and exaggerated assessments of the threat posed by Iraq. The case for military action made by the British government was based on the measured analysis of the threat, on the conviction that they continued containment of Iraq through sanctions was not effective or morally acceptable, and that the human rights violations of the Iraqi regime were of such a scale that they could no longer be tolerated.

The United States, the United Nations and Iraq: 'multilateralism of a kind.'

Article Abstract:

Pres George W. Bush appears determined to use military invasion to overthrow Saddam Hussein regardless of the UN Security Council's and international law's lack of support. The US has historically blended unilateral and multilateral approaches to foreign policy, a strategy possibly leading to a military victory followed by an uneasy peace and occupation.

American power: from 'compellance' to cosmopolitanism?

Article Abstract:

This article evaluates George W. Bush's military policy, focusing on the war on terrorism. The author argues Bush's strategy of 'spectacle war' is modeled on a Cold War mentality which fails to take into account the current global context, especially regarding the military force, and the best approach would be to work within a cosmopolitan framework.
