The global game of football: The 2002 World Cup and the regional development in Japan

Article Abstract:

An insight into the relationship between the global and the local games of football is detailed by focusing on the relationship between the 2002 World Cup and the development of the social and football infrastructure in contemporary Japan. The attempts to utilise football and the (co-) hosting of the 2002 World Cup for sports purposes has benefitted the development of the sport as a commercial spectacle rather than as an everyday practice.

The Olympic games, human rights and democratisation: Lessons from Seoul and implications for Beijing

Article Abstract:

The lessons of Seoul Olympics are re-examined to clarify the Games' contribution to the democratisation of Korea. An examination regarding whether the post-Cold War and post-9/11 eras had a sound basis for believing that the Olympics would be positively associated with human rights amelioration and democratisation is examined.

The allure of global games for 'semi-peripheral' polities and spaces: A research agenda

The apparent allure of global games is explained by emphasizing the significance of questions about global inequality, power and identity. It is determined that international sport is closely implicated in core theoretical themes in identity, inequality and a more nuanced and pervasive conception of power.
