Introduction: communication and the question of history

Article Abstract:

The development of communication research is hampered by the lack of functional theoretical frameworks that should be formed within a historical context. The interplay of cultural, political and economic factors should be included in communication studies. Furthermore, researchers must also adopt the scientific method of research to be able to come up with more relevant and accurate results. An in-depth analysis of interpersonal interaction which is grounded on sound theories and which takes into account the historical context of the situation is certain to present better results.

Forum introduction: social approaches to interpersonal communication

Article Abstract:

All social approaches to communication assume that reality is a product of human interaction, that reflexivity is needed in communications research and that culture is a basic consideration in the understanding of the nuances of interpersonal relations. A discussion of these assumptions is given. The other concepts that may be present in social approaches to communication include the use of symbols in interpersonal encounters and the evolution of the self within a given cultural sphere.

Interpersonal communication, theory, and history

Article Abstract:

Research on interpersonal communication can only be valuable if its proponents take into account the historical context of the situation. Theory construction in the study of interpersonal communication is likewise as important as developing a historical perspective. Since communication is symbolic, meanings can only be understood if there are theoretical and historical bases. Essentially, communications scholars must realize the significance of history and theory in conducting research.
