A premium on fraud; when insurance companies don't pay

Article Abstract:

The position of attorneys in the wake of the International Bahamian Insurance scandal makes clear the need to know as much as possible about the insurance companies recommended. Lawyers for this failed insurance company by some former insurance company customers on the theory that they should have known that the company was operating a money laundering scheme. Lawyers should check insurance ratings, the insurance trade press, state departments of insurance and the National Assn of Insurance Commissioners. This scandal also shows the need for federal regulation of the insurance industry.

When disaster strikes; recent floods and storms show that lawyers need to be prepared to shift into emergency practice modes to speed recovery for clients and themselves

Natural disasters often necessitate legal help regarding insurance and consumer fraud as well as landlord and tenant matters. Free legal services is duye the victims of certain federally declared major disasters from the Federal Emergency Management Administration. This is limited to nonfee generating cases. The most common disaster-related issues affecting people fall into the areas of public benefits, landlord and tenant, housing and insurance.

Putting clients to the test; careful screening at initial interview can minimize malpractice risks

Article Abstract:

For minimizing legal malpractice, careful screening at the first attorney-client interview is necessary. Important points to cover in this interview include checking for conflicts, making sure the client can pay the fee, and screening new matters for existing clients. These are steps all lawyers should follow, regardless of firm size.
