Security measures for your notebook

Article Abstract:

Estimates put the number of notebook computers stolen during 1997 at 265,000, and consequently, security measures are recommended. For example, a security cable is useful for locking a computer to an object, such as a table leg. Kensington MicroSaver makes such a cable. It attaches to a computer's security slot with a barrel lock, and it costs about $40. A drawback is that a security cable could be cut. A somewhat safer device is Port's DefCon 1, which combines a security cable and a motion detector. The DefCon 1 plugs into a computer's security slot via a steel adapter. If the security cable is cut, or if the computer is moved, a loud alarm is activated.
