Affirmative action on way out in California: law school student bodies will be primarily white and Asian, some say

Article Abstract:

A ballot measure in CA to eliminate all state affirmative-action programs is gathering steam thanks to events both in the state and elsewhere. Recent US Supreme Court decisions weigh against traditional interpretations of affirmative action, potentially narrowing the scope of such programs. In CA, Governor Pete Wilson actively backs anti-affirmative action measures, which could be either a statute or an amendment to the state's constitution. The University of California regents recently voted to abandon affirmative action in their admissions policies.

Public records for sale to private firms: newspaper against selling L.A. County's civil data base, citing access concerns

Article Abstract:

A lawsuit and heavy criticism greeted Los Angeles County's plan to sell computer access to civil case records to private companies. The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California and the Los Angeles Times attacked the move, and the newspaper filed suit on Oct 17 saying the arrangement restricts First Amendment access, is an illegal tax, and violates state law. Companies would pay $5,000 annually as well as fees for online searches, potentially bringing the cash-strapped county $1.8 million per year.

Coming back from depression

Article Abstract:

Lawyers seem to suffer more from depression than professionals in other occupations, although it is not apparent whether this disorder is caused by job stress or whether lawyers' inherent character traits make them more susceptible. Disciplinary tribunals are reluctant to regard this as a mitigating factor. Help is available from many bar associations as an outgrowth of their drug abuse programs. Law firms themselves could help by creating a more supportive environment.
