Alternatives to the strike as a model of resistance: case studies and theory building

Article Abstract:

Labor unions adopted alternative strategies to striking after the late 1970s that are only just being recognized as concerted employee resistance, both within and outside of a company. The model these strategies are based on is not released but involves a total change in the power relations between management and union members. Some campaigns adopted under this alternative model include using public opinion as a collective bargaining tool through media involvement and raising issues of social and moral relevance related to contracts.

Labor law and the future of organized labor under the Clinton Administration

Article Abstract:

Labor unions are supporting legislation which might give them what they could not achieve through collective bargaining. Unions will probably pressure the Clinton Administration to make changes in social and fair trade laws, to adopt a more pro-labor attitude in enforcing the law, as well as in NLRB and judicial appointments, and to pass previously blocked laws. Factors, such as worker concern with job security and perceptions of management having disproportionate power, may reverse the trend in declining union membership.

Strong unions are needed for economic success

Article Abstract:

America's status as an important economic player depends on a productive workforce with access to training to upgrade skills, a voice in workplace matters and adequate pay. All of these factors result in job satisfaction and less employee turnover. Management and labor need to work together to resolve workplace issues of concern and unions are the most effective way of empowering workers and giving them a voice.
