Attorneys are an IRS target

Article Abstract:

Targets of tax audits by the IRS have frequently been attorneys in the early 1990s. Sometimes the IRS has conducted spot audit of attorneys on the member rosters of state bar associations, and sometimes targeted attorneys who met a particular profile. The IRS's Market Segment Specialization Program (MSSP) now runs the attorney audit projects. MSSP examiners have specialized audit manuals for each targeted occupation, and these list some specialties as being more productive than others. The attorney-audit manual lists areas for agents to examine such as trust accounts, various kinds of noncash income and travel expenses.

Lawyer jobs to increase 28% by 2005; corporate work is growing, but incomes may drop

Article Abstract:

US Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts show a 28% increase in jobs for attorneys by 2005 due to increased population and increased business activity. The legal areas most affected by the growth should be employee benefits, intellectual property, health care, real estate, the environment, and sexual harassment. Some experts see a growth in contract work and in telecommuting rather than traditional full-time work. Paralegal positions will increase dramatically, with paralegals doing some of the work which used to be done by associates. The rise in paralegal positions will be due to business interest in cost-cutting.
