Automating a records department
Article Abstract:
A state-of-the-art records department is necessary for any good legal practice to manage the large volume of information available today. A state-of-the-art system includes the following capabilities: online searching, bar coding, conflict-of-interest checking, retention scheduling, general office procedures and report generation. While automating does not guarantee efficiency, when properly applied it can significantly reduce costs.

Dispute over modified food hits U.S.; criticism of genetically charged organisms has spread from Europe, but supporters of biotechnology are beginning to fight back

The global controversy over the development and trade of genetically modified organisms is discussed. The advocates point to a lengthy history of conventional genetic modification to support the modern methods which have been so controversial, while the opponents claims that many health and environmental issues are raised.

Taking the paper out of paperwork; IRS and Labor regulations are beginning to evolve toward a greater recognition of electronic records in employee benefits
Article Abstract:
Progress in the use of paperless records administration by federal administrative agencies is discussed. Congress addressed this issue in the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, directing the IRS and the Department of Labor to issue regulatory guidance. Paperless administration should progress faster as technology improves.
