Averting risks in system conversion

Article Abstract:

A law firm contemplating conversion to a program developed by a vendor other than the one responsible for its current system must translate files and information so that the new computer program can read them. This is a highly technical process and very risky for non-experts, even those with detailed instructions, to undertake. It may therefore be wise to hire the vendor to undertake the conversion. The procurement contract for the new system must have final testing and acceptance provisions, safeguard parties' proprietary rights and confidential data, and contain a warranty.

Play smart in buying a system; much rides on a firm's computer acquisitions

Article Abstract:

Law firms selecting a new computer system should hire expert consultants to advise them in view of the time and knowledge required. The first step is preparing a detailed 'request for proposal' for vendors under consideration. All vendors should respond in the same format and answer all questions. The contract with the vendor selected should be detailed, including descriptions of equipment, warranties, and what the system should accomplish to be considered successful. Maintenance contracts and software services agreements are also options.

A system conversion need not be traumatic

Article Abstract:

Computer conversion need not be disruptive to a law firm if proper planning takes place in advance. The law firm should select a project team to work with the computer software consulting business in implementing the conversion. The division of labor between law firm employees helping with the conversion, employees transacting law firm business on the old computer system while the conversion is going on, and employees of the consulting firm must be made clear. Old system reports should be kept to verify the accuracy of the converted data.
