Battles over religion still rage at high court

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court's 1993 docket includes several cases on religious liberty and the separation of church and state. In Church of the Lukumi Babaly Aye v. Hialeah, the court held that municipal ordinances forbidding animal sacrifice violated the First Amendment's guarantee of religious freedom. In Lamb's Chapel v. Center Moriches Union Free School District, the judges held that a public school policy allowing extracurricular after-school meetings on school premises only for non-religious groups was unconstitutional. Jones v. Clear Creek Independent School District was the third case.

High court could reshape church-state; pending cases provide a rare chance to alter the balance

Article Abstract:

The US Supreme Court will decide two church-state cases in 1993. One is Zobrest v Catalina Foothills School District, in which the parents of a deaf man contend that the school district should reimburse them for the cost of providing a sign-language interpreter for their son at his religious high school. The other is Lamb's Chapel v Center Moriches, in which the 'limited open forum' doctrine is at issue, with religious clubs wanting the same after-hours access to school meeting facilities as secular ones.

The Supreme Court is hearing arguments in Rosenberger v.
