Settlements reached after trial

Article Abstract:

Many 1995 verdicts that otherwise would have made the year's top 40 list were settled after the trial. Among these was the environmental class action Bayardo v Occidental Chemical, a trial including 12 of 8700 plaintiffs suing over a chemical plant release. The jury awarded only $3,400 but compensatory and punitive damages were likely, so the company settled all claims for $65 million. Other notable cases include Thermex Energy v Atlas Powder, reduced from $488.5 million to $36 million, and 10 others.

The legacy of Warren E. Burger

Article Abstract:

As Chief Justice of the US, Warren Burger modernized and improved the operation of the justice system, expanded First Amendment law, and raised the status of the state court system. While often a harsh critic of the media, he created the right of access to information and wrote many seminal free-press decisions. He also established many innovative changes to the justice system to make it more efficient and more accessible to the press and the public.
