Serving the underserved - our societal responsibility

Article Abstract:

The bipartisan support in Congress for a balanced federal budget will result in a limited funding among government agencies including the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA, through the Center for Mental Health Services, the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, should convince lawmakers on its effective use of federal aid and its commitment to serve people with substance abuse or serious mental illness problems. The present and future programs of SAMHSA's three centers are discussed.

Prelude or requiem for the 'Mozart effect?

Article Abstract:

It was reported by Raushcer and colleagues that listening to 10 minutes of Mozart's musical raised the abstract reasoning abilities of colleagues students. Meta-analysis has been used to show than an cognitive improvement is small and does not reflect changes in IQ or reasoning ability, but comes purely from performance on one type of cognitive task, with a simple neuropsychological explanation. It is concluded that a shared right-hemisphere locus gives a reasonable explanation for the intermittent positive effects of Mozart's music on difficult spatial tasks.
