Changing of the guard, reweaving of the 'Net

Article Abstract:

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) held its open meeting on Nov 14, 1998 and is a new nonprofit organization, at www.icann.org, replacing Network Solutions Inc in administering domain names. ICANN is also replacing the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority in developing technical standards for the Internet. Software attorneys are concentrating on protecting trademarks on the Internet and on reliable dispute resolution procedures for domain name conflict.

Domain ruling sparks worries; 'first come, first served' rule affects '.com' users

Article Abstract:

The British Royal Courts of Justice has ruled in favor of a policy of first come, first served when two trademark holders both own rights to the United Kingdom's top-level domain "co.uk." A registry of 55,000 companies operating in England, the largest national domain registry, use that name. There are 88 country-based domains and companies using .com will be at a competitive disadvantage because of the British case.

From porn sites to domain fees, trademarks in turmoil on Web

Article Abstract:

The World Wide Web has been a site of much activity in trademark law and examples are ownership and fees for domain names as well as policing pornography sites. There are even Web-watching services that patrol for obscenity infringements, but most only watch new domains as registered by Network Solutions Inc, one of 180 such registries.
