Changing times, changing rules

Article Abstract:

Legal ethics are developing in complexity because the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct were written in 1983, before the Internet, consumer movement and law practices as business entities. Therefore, attorneys' ethical standards need to reflect the changing times. Five attorneys explore some traditional issues that have become more complex: fee disputes, identifying the client, protecting the interests of clients unable to understand the legal issues, retirement of a lawyer and protecting client communications' confidentiality.

Breaking the rules

Article Abstract:

Philip K. Howard has struck a resonating chord with many readers of his new book 'The Death of Common Sense,' and jarred the sensibilities of many others. The book chronicles the ludicrousness of the modern US regulatory system and the straitjackets that keep bureaucrats from actually helping the public they are meant to serve. Howard, co-founder of prestigious New York City firm Howard, Darby & Levin, espouses greater flexibility and room for personal initiative. Conservatives have seized on his book, but Ralph Nader loathes it.
