Civil liabilities and immunities

Article Abstract:

Organizers of strikes or other industrial actions face a range of legal liabilities only some of which are protected by legislative immunities under the Trade Union and Labor Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992. The govt has narrowed those immunities since 1979 to bar sympathetic actions. Further, some actions or those made with certain intents forfeit these protections. Potential torts, trade union responsibility, the essential immunities, their withdrawal, and balloting and notice requirements are discussed.

Relocation and job mobility

Article Abstract:

Employers have many legal issues to consider should they desire to relocate workers. Relocation and job mobility issues should be addressed in contracts of employment, and these contracts will determine many of the rights and liabilities of the parties involved. Issues to be addressed include the possible discriminatory affects of relocation, the expenses of moving, advance notice of relocation and the risk of unfair dismissal that arises when an employee is fired for refusing to relocate.

Implementation of Young Workers Directive

Article Abstract:

The EC's Young Workers Directive, which governs teen-age employees and protects their rights, is being implemented in the UK through the Health and Safety (Young Persons) Regulations 1997. These regulations discard some obsolete rules while providing young workers with protections against occupational safety risks. Proposed draft regulations governing breaks, rest periods, and related areas have also been issued.
