Claimant tells his story in asbestos 'minitrial'; he's among more than 8,500 Maryland workers who sued six companies

Article Abstract:

Former Bethlehem steel worker, dying of lung cancer, is a plaintiff in an asbestos personal injury litigation seeking to prove that the asbestos he was exposed to at work was a 'substantial contributing factor' in his cancer. Porter Hayden Co, the only asbestos maker in the massive litigation who has not settled, contends that Howell's smoking caused his illness. Howell is the only one of four lead plaintiffs still alive. The decision in Howell's case will be binding on the more than 8,500 asbestos wrongful death and personal injury actions still pending in Pennsylvania.

Next phase for asbestos case; plaintiffs win

Article Abstract:

Seven asbestos manufacturers have been found liable of failing to warn workers of possible damage to their health from their defective products. The jurors felt that some of the companies had been aware of the dangers since the late 1930's. The companies found liable were AC & S Inc, GAF Corp, Keene Corp, MCIC Inc, Porter Hayden Co and Pittsburgh Corning Corp. Although pleased with the victory, plaintiffs' attorneys are cautious in their assessment of its impact on about 90,000 asbestos cases pending in other courts.
