Computers 101: the basics

Article Abstract:

The Internet has value for everyone in the basic services of email and file transfer protocol (FTP). People who uncomfortable with computers should consider email as a faster version of the Post Office and FTP as the equivalent of Federal Express. To begin using the services, a computer and modem are necessary. There are several online services that have easy-to-use graphical user interfaces for beginners. Files from common word processing, spreadsheet and presentation programs can be sent over the Internet. Voice communication is also possible without long-distance charges.

Word processing skills are valuable for insurance industry professionals because of the broad range of tasks which can be performed at reduced costs. Letters, fliers, newsletters, and letterheads are basic documents which can be created. Incorporation of spreadsheets, graphics, and tables is possible through joint use of other programs. Reference to detailed step-by-step instructions tailored to insurance industry professionals may be useful.

Financial advisers should be aware of the many uses for the Internet. Approximately 100 mil people use the Internet each year, possibly growing to 1 bil by 2000, and three of four homes in the US have access to a computer either at home or through an office. Financial advisers should consider purchasing a laptop with Windows95 software and access search services such as Yahoo to research Forbes magazine, stocks and insurance.
